José Clemente Orozco

This Saturday we went on a guided tour through downtown Guadalajara and Tlaquepaque. The downtown tour centered around the three works of Orozco that appear in downtown Guadalajara, which are just breathtaking.

José Clemente Orozco is one of the three main muralists from Mexico, along with Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros. Orozco was from Jalisco. That's why so much of his work is here in Guadalajara. Of course Rivera became more well known than the other two. I had never really seen much of Orozco's work in person until this Saturday.

I took tons of pictures, but of course pictures don't do murals justice, there's just so much going on. These three pieces were commisioned by the government. The first appears in the auditorium at the University of Guadalajara, the second in the government palace, and the third in what was an orphanage at that time. I didn't post all the pictures. Just the pictures that were the most panoramic.

¿Supiste que Orozco fue manco? o decir sólo tenía una mano

Orozco was an amazing genius! Just to think, that cathedral ceiling is 30 feet high dome and yet he managed to make the mural appear flat!

You should visit his studio, it's diagonally across from Los Arcos by the Rincon de Minerva. I went inside but they were renovating it so I didn't see everything.

Make sure you go to the Theatro Municipal to see his paintings on the ceiling. You have to purchase a ticket for a show to go though. I recommend the ballet.

Love you cuz!
